Text Matthew 5:33-37

Key Verse: “Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ be ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” Mt 5:37

I was deeply convicted recently about the great importance of honesty.  I had told a little “white” lie that I didn’t think was that big of a deal, and well, one thing led to another (more “white” lies) and I got myself into a mess.  “If I had only told the truth,” I thought to myself as I was rapidly trying to untangle it all.

This passage has many interpretations, but the one that I find myself clinging to these days is the simple literal one:  “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ be ‘No’.  To me this says plainly, be honest with yourself and those around you.  Satan’s greatest tool against us is deception and I believe that when we are dishonest with ourselves or with those around us, we give into his agenda and we lose sight, even in the little things, of where & how Christ calls us to live.

In the end of my story, after much time spent undoing the mess of hurt and frustration that I had created with my little white lie, I felt very foolish for not just beginning with the truth.  Live in the Truth!

In Christ, Trane
